BROCK DEHAVEN | Travel, Style and Menswear.
Motif No.3: Hello Brock, can tell me a bit about who you are, where you are from, and where you would like to see the direction of your career going?
Brock: Hi! My name is Brock DeHaven. Currently I live in Southern California and study advertising within the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. I was raised in Princeton, New Jersey and then moved to Colorado two weeks before my freshmen year of high school. I graduated from high school in 2014 and then took a gap year, in which I worked in Boulder, Colorado for half a year before saving enough money to travel to Australia for a few months. While I was 18 I lived in Australia and I fell in love with using photography to document my experiences. I returned back to the states and have been studying and pursuing a career in the creative field ever since. Right now, my tentative plan after graduating from college is to leverage the my current portfolio and the connections I’ve built, to travel as a freelance artist as long as I can. If that doesn’t work out for whatever reason, I would also love to work within an agency or in-house at a fashion company as a creative director but love just going where life takes me.
Motif No.3 Were would you like to travel in 2018 and what about traveling appeals to you?
Brock: Life change have been one of the only constants in my life with moving as much as I did in my childhood. With this said, traveling definitely fulfills this sense of wanderlust I have within me. The ability to discover parts of the world I’ve never seen before and learn about new cultures is what I love about traveling the most. It shakes up the mundanity of the routines we find ourselves in and nothing brings me more joy than walking around a place I’ve never been before with a camera in hand. In 2018, I would love to go to Greece, Milan, Northern Italy and Paris.
Motif No.3: While we were on an editorial shoot together, you mentioned going to fashion week this year, which one captivates and why?
Brock: Paris fashion week captivates me the most due to its inherit charm and inclusion of some of my favorite designers (Sandro, Ami Paris, Louis Vuitton). Additionally, I have an infatuation with French culture and speak the language, so it is all super enticing to me.
Motif No.3: What about menswear and fashion do you like? What brands stand out to you?
Brock: Fashion is one of the only chances we get each day to express ourselves to the world, and I think that’s what makes it so exciting. It makes people feel empowered, and when it is done right, it becomes an art form that can inspire others. Besides the brands mentioned above, I love Club Monaco, All Saints, Everlane, and Saturday’s NYC.
Motif No.3: How do you resonate with smaller designer brands?
Brock: My mother is a small business owner in Colorado and after helping put together the store and seeing how hard the process behind building your own company is, I have an unbelievable amount of respect for smaller brands and I believe in supporting as many as I can. I love the ability and accessibility smaller brands have, thus allowing the customer to develop personal relationships with the people who are creating what goes on your body. This is so much more rewarding then buying mass produced clothing to me.
Motif No.3: You work along side a number of models, photographers, and influencers, how important is collaboration?
Brock: Collaboration is what I enjoy most about my work. Developing relationships, learning from other’s experiences and getting insight on my creative work is essential in allowing me to grow as an artist.
Motif No.3: Describe your personal style.
Brock: Timeless, minimalistic style with an edge.
Motif No.3: What does a typical day look like for you?
Brock: I typically wake up at 8:30, go to the gym, come home and shower, and then make a smoothie and breakfast and go to class for a few hours. Then, I eat lunch on campus, go to tennis practice, come home and work on some projects or shoot, make dinner, do some homework and go to bed around 12:30.
Motif No.3: Where in Los Angeles do you like to brunch?
Brock: My favorite places to brunch in California are Gjusta, and Gjelina Take Away. In New York, you’ll always find me at Two Hands.
Motif No.3: Who are 3 people who are inspiring you and how are they impacting you?
Brock: My mother inspires me on a daily basis with her work ethic, creativity and selflessness. She is more in tune with me than any other person on this planet and impacts my creative processes, as well as my personal life everyday.
My father inspired me with his work ethic, selflessness and wisdom. He is incredibly insightful and helps guide me through personal turmoil and offers the best advice. Outside of my parents, there are so many people inspire me. From Elon Musk, to Bill Gates, to all my friends who are pursuing their passions and working as hard as they can to make their dreams come true. I find the community I’ve built around myself has the biggest impact on my daily life.
